With MailSteward version 8.x, a new system of licensing, registration, and upgrading has been instituted. It is no longer necessary to download the full version of MailSteward, MailSteward Lite, or MailSteward Pro. Purchasers of MailSteward now receive a license key. Entering the license key into the free version will activate all of the features and remove the free version's 15,000 email limit. When a new release is available, the MailSteward application will notify the user and optionally download, install, and relaunch it.
For registered users of MailSteward, MailSteward Lite, or MailSteward Pro previous to version 8.x, there is a $20 charge to upgrade. Registered users of pre-8.x versions of MailSteward Lite that choose to upgrade will receive a license for the full MailSteward application, rather than the 8.x version of MailSteward Lite. Upgrades to the 8.x version of the MailSteward Site License and the MailSteward Pro Site License are also $20. Registered users who want the latest version prior to 8.0 can send an email to mailstew at mailsteward dot com, and a dmg of version 7.9.8 will be sent to them.
If you are a registered user of a previous version of MailSteward, you can upgrade to version 8.x by taking the following steps. Once you have upgraded, subsequent releases will be downloaded and installed from within the MailSteward application.
1. Purchase the $20 MailSteward upgrade license at the pubblog store.
2. Enter your last name and your original order id from your previous purchase of MailSteward, along with the new license key you receive from the upgrade purchase, into the form below, and click on the upgrade button.
3. Your new license key will be entered into your record in the registered users' database, so that you can then download the 8.x free version and activate it by entering your orginal order id and your new license key.
If you purchased in 2008, you can upgrade to version 8.x for free. Just fill out the form below, and leave the license key box blank, and you will receive a license key.
Version 8.2.8, build 1151 of MailSteward has the following changes:
- Restore search within a search results list feature, which was inadvertently broken in release 8.2.8, build 1149.
- Fix bug in export mbox file that caused some emails with encoded From fields to not be exported.

- The email date and time is now adjusted to the local system time zone. This may cause some duplicate emails to be archived the first time an archive is done with the new version 8.0.4 because the adjusted datetime will not match some email that has already been archived.
Version 8.0.3, build 1112 of MailSteward has the following change:
- This build fixes a bug introduced in version 8.0.1 that caused exporting a MailSteward database to fail for email for which raw source has not been archived.
Version 8.0.3, Build 1111 of all versions of MailSteward fixes a bug introduced in version 8.0.3, build 1110, that causes archiviing to fail because of a missing Perl module that is required to adjust the datetime to the local time zone. As a result, the feature of adjusting to the time zone has been removed in this build.
Version 8.0.3 of MailSteward & MailSteward lite has the following changes:
- New feature to refine a search by searching within an existing search results list.

- Fixed a bug introduced in version 8.0.1 that caused the Merge Databases... command to fail.

- The To, From, and Subject fields have been enlarged to accommodate unusually long text.
- A bug has been fixed in base64 decoding that caused some attachments to be unviewable.

Version 8.0 of MailSteward, MailSteward Lite, and MailSteward Pro has the following changes:
- The free version is now activated to the full version by entering a license key.
- You can now check for, install, and relaunch new releases from within MailSteward.
- Added Archive History feature to the File menu to keep and display a log of successful archives.
- The printing of email text and HTML views has been fixed so that lines are not cut off and everything is properly formatted.
- Fixed handling of 3 digit years in email dates.
- Fixed some problems with importing MailTags priorities correctly, and searching for priorities.
